What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files that a website saves in your browser. Similar tools, like "local storage", work the same way. They help a site remember things, such as where you left off.
What our website uses
| Name | What it does | Type | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| dwf-intro | Shows our welcome animation only once per visit. | Essential | Until you close the tab |
| dwf-orientation | Saves your progress in the volunteer orientation course. | Essential | Until you clear it |
| googtrans | Remembers the language you chose in the language picker. Set only if you pick a language other than English. | Preference | Until you close the browser or switch back |
| dwf-consent | Remembers whether you accepted or declined cookies (asked of visitors in Europe). | Essential | Until you clear it |
| Vercel Web Analytics | Counts page visits so we know which pages help people most. It doesn't use cookies or identify you. | Analytics | No cookie |
| _ga, _ga_* | Google Analytics: counts visits and which pages and buttons are used, as totals. Google's advertising features are turned off. | Analytics | Up to 2 years |
| _gcl_au | Google Ads: tells us when someone who clicked one of our ads goes on to sign up or give, so we spend our ad grant wisely. It is not used to show you personalized ads. | Ad measurement | 90 days |
Visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland are asked first, and these Google cookies stay off unless you accept.
Partner websites
Some features come from other companies, and they may set their own cookies when you use them:
- Zeffy and Every.org, when you donate or buy a ticket.
- YouTube, only after you press play. We use YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode.
- Map tiles from OpenStreetMap, on our maps.
- Google Translate, only after you choose a language other than English.
Their cookie policies explain how they use them.
How to control cookies
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time, or use the Google Analytics opt-out add-on. Our website will still work. You may just see the welcome animation again, or lose your orientation progress.
